Ford ranger transmission problems.
Hello, i have a 2001 ford ranger v6 automatic, and my transmission does not like to shift into drive when the engine it is cold. It also has a tendency to hard shift from first to second gear, on the cold start as well. I have been looking into this problem for a while now and have not found a fix. If anyone could help me try to figure out the problem; it would be much appreciated.

Use, borrow, or come by a ELM scan tool & running FORScan diagnostic freeware (that's tweaked for Fords), on the viewing device of your choice as discussed here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html, as this inexpensive but powerful combo can query all of the vehicle computer controllers (including the tranny controller), for trouble code clues that can help focus a trouble shoot. Post up All trouble code Numbers.
This combo can also monitor & display live PID sensor feeds to the computer/controllers, so we can watch what's going on back & forth between them.
You mentioned you've been dealing with this problem for some time, so did it come about suddenly after some event, or slowly over time?
How many miles on the tranny & has the tranny filter & fluid been changed with a licensed Mercon V fluid & if so, was it just a pan drop, filter change & pan refill, or was a Full tranny fluid pump-out performed?
Some initial thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.
