Been dealing with this noise for a couple of weeks. Sounds to me like a chirping sound that changes with engine RPM only, not vehicle speed. Only occurs under at least partial driving load.
Nothing belt related. Removed serpentine and noise was still there.
Not spark plug related- changed them all with no noise change.
I DO have some broken exhaust manifold studs and I believe a broken baffle in the muffler, so this could be an exhaust leak, but it sounds a bit mechanical to me, like a bearing.
Definitely coming from the engine compartment, and we think the passenger side more so.
Getting ready to take the truck, camper and all family on a couple of hour trip and just would like to know what I'm hearing so I don't have to be spooked the whole way. Anything in the engine compartment that would make noises like this only under these conditions? Thanks for any help.
Could be your transmission inspection plate or maybe an exhaust heat shield. Just my .02
I hope
Transmission plate has been taken care of. Didn't really find any heat shields in the area but I will keep looking. Thing runs so well that I guess I'm not really worried but whatever it is certainly needs something. Just hoping someone has heard something similar and can point me there. Thanks.
When you removed the belt, did you spin all of the pulleys by hand? Could be a bad bearing in one of the pulleys.
Tensioner was worn so I changed that and the belt first thing. Eventually took the belt off completely and did a quick drive around the block. Sound was there with no accessories turning.
So nobody out there has heard such a noise as this from the v10? Hitting the road in a couple of hours and hoping it's just an exhaust leak. Second vehicle coming just in case it develops into something along the way. Happy Labor Day weekend all.

Enjoy your trip!
The heat shields on the factory Y-pipe (actually it's a T-pipe ) are thin stainless and are spot welded to the pipe, if they start to loosen up they can get a pretty good vibe/buzz going.
Here you can see the heat shields on the bottom of the T-pipe pretty clearly.
There was a member on the Super Duty Forum that had a a similar problem which exhibited noise under load. I believe he found one of the baffles inside the valve covers had broken the plastic rivets. Buy one of those cheap stethoscopes from Harbor Freight. Might help you find the noise. Hope this helps
Iv been chasing a knocking sound under my hood and have narrowed it down to #9 cyclinder. My issue is something to do with the valve train, hoping its something simple as a broken valve spring but have yet to pull the valve cover off yet. If not that then the head will have to come off to do further inspection of the valves. Im just taking it easy for now.
Yours almst sounds like an exhaust leak like you said with the broken stud. Can you tell if its cutting out when driving. A quick way to see if it is will be puttig it in drive and holding brake while giving a steady amount of gas just before your feel the truck wanting to move. Hold it there for a few seconds and see if it starts to shutter/stutter, you can do the same thing in reverse. You almost want to peel out but dont let it get that high of RPM. If thats the case then i would look into a faulty coil pack. The truck will not always sense a bad one and throw an engine code, only when its really running bad will it does that but cars now adays have a mind of their own.
Since you already had the spark plugs replaced, then you could always go back and double check and make sure they are still in there good and snug. An exhaust leak sound could also be a precurser to a spark plug blow out (ask me how i know ).
Thanks for all the tips. I'll get back to checking on those this week. Trip out of town went well with no snags. Noise is constant but not getting worse. Driving with the windows open covers up most of the noise which helped my brain relax a bit. It sure runs well. Exhaust leak is most likely the cause but I don't want to open up that can of worms until we get through one last camping trip late this month. This truck is highly rusty underneath so no way is it coming apart cleanly. 😀😀😀😜
