Well crap here I guess I go again. Replaced the ICP the other day and have been driving the truck back and forth to work. Started acting up again today when pulling out. Sluggish throttle, black smoke out the back and then takes off. At least this time it did not die on me. OK, now what? This is getting ridiculous. Not had it scanned again
Checked it and looked clean. Unhooked the ICP and cranked right up. Will it hurt to run the truck with ICP unhooked long? WHen this problem started if you unhooked the ICP it would not start. Could the IPR be going bad or something else?
The pig tail is probably bad. You can run it a long time without it plugged in... you will get a CEL. Just check for codes regularly if you run that way any period of time... heard of guys going more than a year unplugged.
Update a mechanic friend asked when if I had when I changed the fuel filters last. It had only been about 4 months and a few thousand miles since changing. When this mess started. Pulled filters the other day, secondary a little dirty, Primary looked worse. Changed both and even pull the water separator plug out and drained it and sprayed with like a can and a half of brake cleaner in that hole to clean out. Let me tell you there was nasty, smelly crap that came out. And replaced drain plug with one water separator's HFCM Water Separator Drain Plug Upgrade 6E7Z-9C082-A. Cranked up great, finally threw a check engine light and scanned. The ICP code again but I had it unplugged, not worried. But the main thing is I now have to sound like a Light pinging sound coming from the right hand side of the engine. Can't pinpoint it, seems to run fine not temps out of whack, or overheating. I'm at a loss.
No I have not checked the fuel pressure. I don't know how. Can I rent, make or buy what I need. I went out a bit ago and found 2 small wet/puddles under my truck. 1 around the primary fuel filter and 1 up next to the front tire. Never leaked until I changed those filters. I tightened up everything.
Also make sure to put some fresh oil on the o rings that are on the filter caps. They may have ripped or cracked if you didn't. [Leak]
And make sure to only use Motorcraft filters.
Have you hooked up a scan guage or other device that can give you live values? I think it would be a very wise $150 investment and will make troubleshooting MUCH easier as you can read ICP, IPR etc and you can hopefully stop chasing your tail here.
Best part is you can mount it up and use it permanently to measure all values that the engine sees. VERY useful. Just no EGT or fuel pressure as those aren't there from the factory.
Update, had truck live scanned the other day and everything checked out and was within limits. I also changed and put a Ford ICP sensor, new hot side boots from Riffraff..6.0L CAC Intercooler "Hot Side" Boot Kit 03-07. Asked about checking fuel pressure, he said that he does not do that. Truck runs great, I guess dirty fuel filters or clogged. So I called another local shop that does. Now check this out, the guy who answered the phone asked how long my truck had not been running. Told him that it ran was just wanting to have fuel pressure checked. Said they would not check it unless I was having problems! Never had anyone not want business before.
So I guess I need to figure how to build one and what I need to do this.
The truck can run just fine on low fuel pressure, but at the same time, be killing your not so cheap injectors.
especially if the base pressure is low at idle.
here is all you need + some fuse taps from advanced.
