What kind of U-joints are you all using. I had replaced mine with Brute Strength U-joints and on the high way this morning one decided to let go. Which in turn busted my drive shaft, dented my gas tank, and left me with a 100 flatbed bill. I want the strongest ujoints i can get. I'm going to have to get a new driveshaft made, so i figured i might as well make it strong.
my feeling is that that would be a good question for the people that are making your driveshaft. i have not had any trouble with the brutes to date (does not mean i won't) but they should be able to tell you what works good.
MY F150 IS LIFTED WITH BIG LEAFS NOT BLOCKS SO MY DRIVESHAFT HAS A PRETTY GOOD ANGLE. I WAS GOING THROUGH SPICERS ABOUT EVERY 6 MOS. I FOUND A U-JOINT CALLED A NEAPCO BRUTE FORCE, THEY ARE A SEALED RACING U-JOINT. THEY ARE FORGED NOT CAST, THEY HAVE SYNTHETIC GREASE, TEFLON SEALS, AND THE ROLLERS ARE LONGER THAN NORMAL TO DISTRIBUTE THE FORCE. 2 YEARS AN COUNTING AND NOT A SQUEAK, LAST YEAR I TOOK THEM APARTS TO GREASE THEM THEY WERE PERFECT. TWICE THE PRICE OF THE JOBBERS BUT 2 TIMES THE JOINT.
Just a tip from a Ford mechanic I know. Most people pump grease into u-joints untill it comes out the cup seals. If you do this you just killed the seals and shortend the life of your u-joint. Instead give it a few pumps and thats it. The grease will get spun out to the cups and the seals will retain the grease and keep moisture out.
An easy way to check if your u-joints are going bad is to spray them down with WD40 and go for a drive. Dieing u-joints normally will show signs of bleading rust from the cup seals after the drive.
I'M UP IN BRITISH COLUMBIA, AND HAPPEN TO BE A PARTS MAN SO I WAS ABLE TO SOURCE THEM OUT OF ONE OF THE WAREHOUSES I HAD ACCESS TO. SO I JUST GRABBED MY YELLOW PAGE FOUND A DRIVELINE SHOP 5 BLOCKS FROM HERE THAT HAS THEM. WHERE ABOUTS ARE YOU? I WAS JUST ON THE NEAPCO WEBSITE (WWW.NEAPCO.COM) AND THERE WAS AN E-MAIL ADRESS FOR INFO. MAYBE THEY COULD GIVE YOU THE NUMBER OF A LOCAL DISTRIBUTOR.
