I am wondering if anybody has come up with any clever suggestions to shorten the height of the factory antenna. I park in a parking garage now and my 4x4 f-150 hits every freak'n support. I know that the antenna is a fiberglass core with the wire wrapped around. I don't think that you just cut it. Any help would be great. Thanks.
An antennas length is determined by the frequency that it is designed to recieve. So the short answer is that no, you just can't cut it.
You can probably find an after market antenna to fit your size requirements though. A "loaded" antenna is on in which part of the antenna wire is coiled around the base so you still get the proper length of wire but it's packaged in a shorter antenna. Most CB antennas are of this type.
I trimed abou 3 inches off of my antenna last night. Drove around his morning and could still get the stations that my home stereo has a hard time getting.
Reception is as good as before. I know that the lenght of the antenna is very important, but with the freq that we're working with and the nature of FM stereo broadcasting, I doubt it makes very much difference.
Well, my antenna not only hits beams in the parking garage, but also hits the florescent shop lights in my garage. So I need something shorter. Instead of shortening mine, I bought a shorter billet aluminum antenna. If I go on a road trip and need better reception I still have my original antenna to screw in.
