The lower ignition rod actuator broke in my 1990 F150 w/
auto and tilt wheel. I have the steering wheel off, turn signal
switch removed, upper cover casting off, lower casting loose
ect. I cannot figure out how to get the tilt mechanism apart to
get the actuator out of there. There are two pins or bushings with
threads running through the center that hold the "u-joint" of the
tilt column together. Do I take these out to get at the actuator? If so, how do I do it? Any help on how to install this would really help.
Neither Haynes or Chilton describe this procedure.
Yes you need to remove the two pivot pins. Then the locking lever needs to be moved off the tilt locating pins and then you can exchange the actuator. There is a special tool for the pins but sometimes you can find a bolt that will screw in the threaded area and use pliers to pull the pins.
