I know this is probably a recurring topic, but I know it is different for each person. I have a small landscape company and I have 2 ford trucks. The one in question is a 2002 V10 triton that my guys rear ended a dump truck. It looks like no engine damage or frame damage. My buddy, who rebuilds cars, wants to trade my truck and $1000 for a 2006 PSD that needs a head gasket replaced. It actually has an extended cab vs my single cab. Would I be better rebuilding my front end for $700 plus labor(guessing another $500) or trading and paying the extra and $200 to fix the head gasket? It would be towing a trailer almost everyday and driving on average 75 miles a day.

Obviously the diesel is newer. How many miles on each truck?
Nobody charges $200 to R&R a headgasket on a 6.0, the gasket itself costs $155. Average cost is probably $2-3k for the full job. Doing only one side is a janky repair.
I think that says it all. I honestly needed the slightest reason not to take the other truck. It honestly sounded like too good of a deal and I know how bad this guy is needing a v10 engine. Especially not knowing why it needed a new gasket or what damage was caused in the process.

Exactly what I was thinking. No one charges only $200 to do a 6.0L head gasket. If it was that cheap and easy, everyone would do it lol
The 6.0 is notorious for having problems. It can be bulletproofed and turned into a great engine, but it sounds like this one could be one in need of alot of work to make it run right. Granted a diesel "in good working order" is superior to the V10. But the V10 is still a good engine, a friend of mine has a concrete company and has 2 V10 superduties he uses. He does alot of heavy towing with them and they each have near 300,000 miles and are still going strong. He often jokes how they wont break down so he can justify buying a diesel.
head gasket problems usally risk cracks in the piston walls, bearing damage, oil pump damage, warped heads or valve tops, etc. its hardly ever just a gasket change. stay away.
