i just got another bump.. one that i have needed for awhile.. hope to have it legal and roadworthy soon.. got the usual FE exhaust leaks from cracked manifolds so that will be the first issue to look at..
i went to the shop this morning and started playing with my new toy.. the exh. manifolds are def. cracked and 1 bolt is broke off already.. so tomorrow i will pull the front cap off to make it easy to work on.. while i am doing that , i have a 4 bbl int. manifold and a new holley i will put on it since the old 2bbl. is leaking out the acc. pump and a intake gasket is cheaper than a carb. kit.. some new plugs, dura spark ing. cap, and wires should make it run good ..the brakes work but are a bit spongy so not sure what that will take, e-brake works good so maybe just need bleeding.. the brake booster may be leaking because the engine really gets rough when i hit the brakes. the seat is ripped on the drivers side so will re-upholster it. then later replace the floor pans, the cab mounts are solid so it wont be hard to do.. i am hoping to have it where i can work with it in a week or two.. i will up date as i go.. i have my other bump in the shop right now getting a new coat of red paint.. then i think it may have to find a new home for it, i have too many trucks to keep them all tagged and insured..
Sounds like booster is bad. Prolly makes a vacuum leak sound while the engine is running and your foot off the pedal. Heard from under the dash. The back of the M/C is prolly wet from brake fluid also. Buy a Combo Unit that has both the M/C and Booster together in one box.
yea jaff your right, i would buy the combo..if my pockets were a bit deeper...i have several parts trucks out back so probably will have to borrow the parts off one of them....but i will get new once i become rich and famous.. ha ha ha ha ha
Nice truck. Should fix up nicely and the flatbed should come in handy. Thanks for the photo of the engine compartment. I was going to upgrade my brakes to a vaccuum assist but I didn't think it woulf fit with the washer tank there. I see it does...
if ya need a pic of anything else coppertales just let me know..
i ordered some gaskets and tune-up parts, should be here by the weekend.. i found one intake i had for a 63 t-bird 390..i think i will use it.. i can also check the rocker shafts and clean the top end a bit while i am in there... the only exhaust manifolds i could find in my parts stock had too small of outlets to use on the truck..so i also have a set of headers coming. the stock FE truck manifolds were always a bit restrictive anyway..... if i can get more air in..and more exhaust out it should make the old truck work harder.. ... i think this will be a fine addition to my rolling stock..
I have been gathering parts for the "flat bump" the headers should be here today..i have the intake, carb and gasket's so i can convert it to 4bbl. a petronic kit for the dist., spark plugs, wires, the brake parts it needs and a bigger radiator..i didnt want to start on it till i had the parts ready so it wouldnt be down for long.. i have been using it around the yard as a tow truck. i put the boom off my spare engine hoist on the rear bumper it works great for moving rigs around the yard by myself. now i dont have to wait for help moving cars around.....
i also may of found the original engine that was in my 71.. is there a way to tell besides just the date code if the engine was the original engine in a 71 f100? i am not sure if part of the VIN is stamped on the block or something

Reason: spelling
Nothing is stamped on the block to match the truck. The VIN and door sticker will tell you what it came with, but not if what is in it is original. There are casting codes on the block that will help estimate the date. Matching #'s is a GM thing.

Warranty Plate riveted to the left door face below the latch. Has the Warranty Number (VIN); Wheelbase in inches, MAX GVW LBS, codes for the COLOR/MODEL/BODY/TRANS/AXLE/DSO stamped on it.
Beginning in 1970: Safety Standard Certification Label glued to the left (drivers side) B pillar below the striker plate, has the production date, VIN and misc GVWR's printed on it.
thanks number...that is what i thought.. just thought i would check with the experts to be sure.. not that it matters anyway since i have already changed my 71f100 over to a 300-6 ..i just found this engine with a d1 date code, in a 1980 truck i was stripping out.. it came from the same place that i sold my engine to back in 87, sure would of been good if it was my original engine but i guess some things will never be known.. ha ha ha ha
i spent the day playing with the 72 f350.."flat bump".. messed with the brakes and figured out the booster and m/c are good..i used vice grips and blocked off the r-frt. brake hose, then brakes pumped up good and it stops great except for a slight pull....
i got the frt. cap off (a bummer by myself).. pulled the spark plugs they were old rusty and crusty on the outside, but all looked great dry and a slight brown tint.. then checked compression all good at 160-170 even with a low battery.. then i checked the stroke and was VERY HAPPY!! to find out it is a 390 ..
i need to check the date code on the engine block because the intake,V/Cs, timing cover and oil pan are ford blue, but the heads and block are some weird shade of greenish blue.. i guess it was either rebuilt and painted back the wrong color or had a different longblock installed at some point.. messed with the exhaust bolts a little with PB blaster spray and light tapping but no good.. ..so tomorrow i will pick up a full bottle of oxygen so i can apply a little heat to get the manifolds off..
the JR headers i bought sure look good!!! large tubes, thick flanges and good welds... looks like they will fit good and out of the way of the starter even.. will get some pictures when i get them installed
Here's some useless info. I believe the paint color you describe is early pontiac engine paint color.
I guess if they couldn't put a cadillac converter on it.....
