Is your cable one piece or two? If two then definitely check the lower end by the tranny.
Mine broke there (after I removed the plastic gear, I noticed the broken cable) & I think the cruise control module seized on me.

TWO different speedometer gears:
Metal or nylon DRIVE gear on the output shaft / Nylon DRIVEN gear on the end of the cable.
Inside the speedometer cable housing is a woven steel core that's supposed to be lubed every so often. When the lube dries out, the core binds up inside the housing, eventually snaps.
Auto parts stores sell a universal woven steel core kit. Cut it to length, coat with a fine film of graphite, install in the housing.
