Speedo gear

Hi. I just got my speedometer and cable back from Bob's speedometer shop (boy, was that expensive) and I'm trying to reinstall it. My engine is a 239 and it's a 3 speed tranny ('54).

When I pulled the cable out of the tranny, there was a plastic gear at the very end and a cylindrical housing right in front of that and a kind of washer/flange attached at the cable end of the housing. This flange was flush with the transmission when it was installed, but I can't get it flush or up to the tranny during the reinstall...it's about a 1/4 inch or so away...The plastic gear obviously isn't meshing with whatever internal gear it's supposed to.

The guy from Bob's said it should just slide right back in, but I didn't think that was going to be the case. I took some needle nose pliers and tried turning the plastic gear (which detaches from the cable) in the hole in an attempt to get it to go in farther, but no luck. Any hints on how to do this job, which I'm sure is supposed to be very simple? Thought I'd better check before I try to force it. - Thanks, JR

Is it getting hung up on the O-ring when you're
pushing it in??

Steve,
I already figured it out. I thought the cable gear was keeping the cable end housing from going into the transmission all the way because it wasn't meshing with the transmission gear or something.

Then I thought I'd try to push the cable end housing in without the cable gear attached to see if it would slide in all the way. It didn't. So it apparently WASN'T the cable gear keeping it from sliding in after all. It's just a REALLY tight fit (probably in part due to the o ring). I reattached the cable gear and pushed the housing all the way in by tightening up the lock washer/bracket thing.

Like I said, I just didn't want to force it without good cause. I appreciate your help. - JR

Hi JR, i admire the patience you have, as far as taking your time on this type thing onr any other thing. Because i understand you understand the phylosopy, once done right, then it never has to be done over again. This is someting i always practiced. I think that fit (concerning that tight Oring fit, gives assurance that particular part at that speedo at the tranny, will not leak for 20 years or better, i believe in patience and taking my time like you do. I think you have a knack to do something once, then can be done with it, We share this in common.....Janet
