I've been going around and around today trying to find the proper self-adjuster cable for my 95 Ranger 2.3L. First off, according to my Ford shop manual, I should have 9" brakes, but it turns out the truck has 10" drums. I currently have the cable that looks like it should fit, but is too long and has absolutely no tension in it when hooked up. The other parts I have been able to find at AutoZone and Advance list for the truck look nothing like the part I took off. This one is a cable with a metal end that has a spring inside it. The guy at the parts counter visually matched it up but the cable is just too long!
Does anyone have a part number and source for this thing??
The info I can find indicates you could have 9 or 10 inch drum brakes. The adjuster cable with a spring is for a chrysler product. It is possible someone did a "custom" brake job to your truck. You can get kits that include all the hardware for the self adjusters as well as the hold down (springs, etc) kits.
It turned out the truck had 10" drums, despite my Ford manual stating otherwise. I ended up going to Pep Boys and getting the kit that included the cable and spring, so it looks like I'll just end up replacing all of the self-adjuster stuff on that side. I think its nuts that I had to purchase all that just to get the proper cable though.
Well, there are a few kits that are available for the rear drum brakes. There is a spring kit, which I had already purchased. It is about $6.50 and includes all the springs and miscellaneous hardware for both sides. Then there is a self-adjuster kit which just includes the parts specific to the adjuster. It comes with a new adjuster screw, cable, return spring (the long, low tension one, not the longer coil spring that ties between the two shoes), arm, cable and cable guide. There wasn't anything wrong with the rest of the parts I had, I just needed a replacement cable because mine had broke. It was overkill for me to replace all the other self-adjuster stuff just to get a new cable.
