I'm looking a set of D9TE-FA heads and wondering if they will fit my 460. I got the engine (came out of a 1979 RV) to replace my dead Olds motor on my jet boat. I want to raise the compression ratio a little. I noticed that it has the closed chambers and the pedestals for the rockers. If everything interchanges I might go ahead and get them. Let me know, thanks.
D9TE is a block casting. I am fairly certain there are no D9TE heads for 385 blocks. Look on the outside edge of the cylinder heads for their casting number. Any 385 heads will fit on that block, but I assume you plan on using a carb, so the later E7 and F3 heads will not work for you. Depending on which cylinder heads you are looking at, you may not need a compression bump. If you need increased compression, deck the block, or heads, or both, and make sure you have the ports cleaned up.
Take a trip to the salvage yards and look for a set of early 70's DOVE-C heads (might be hard to find). I built a nitrous gulping bored/ stroked 460 with those heads.. Just gotta clean up the ports, especially the exhaust... good luck to you.
I could have bought a set of DOVE heads, but they needed to be redone. I have the original D3VE's, but they are needing a valve job (2 burned ex. valves) and 6 exhaust manifold studs broken off. The heads I am looking at are on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/261823702784?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
