Hardy - Doing a translation, with what little German I know, schloss would be a large house, and maybe even a manor house or castle. And a schraube is a bolt. So, it would basically be a "house bolt". Right?
Over here that is a "carriage bolt". But the dimensions of the square shank on our carriage bolts is not right for the bed bolts. As Jim said, the openings in the bed that are square are too small to take the carriage bolt. But with some work they can be used, and if stainless is used you are set for a long time.
On Big Whitey, I noticed it has 6 bed bolts and the originals are no longer there. I will need to get under there to get into the tanks and would like to at least put SST carriage bolts instead of the grade 5 cap bolts. I'll look at the parts truck too, but that thing is rough as a cob; who knows though, it does have some gems here and there for nice parts the others don't.
Hi Fuzzface

Dave - I'm confused. Which "those bolts/screws" are you talking about?
What ever the one are called for the flare side bed that reamer showed and you the size of.
I figured keep it all in 1 place and wanted to know the size to.
Be cause my truck had no floor or cross braces I plan to see if I can use the style side parts truck bed floor.
If I can swap AC firewall, bed floor should be cake!

Regular carriage bolts you can buy don't work that well, when I used them I had to grind flats on them so I could put a adjustable wrench on them to hold them when I tightened them.
If you look at the picture of the original bolts at the beginning of this thread, you will see the head and the square shank are very large, but the hole in the frame is small. What they are doing is tightening the bolt down hard, till the square shank bottoms out on top of the frame. This keeps the thin u-channel of the bed from getting crushed. When you use regular bolts of any type with the wide beds, you have to tighten them down and use your judgment, if you tighten them too tight it will crush the bed channel.
What I use are 1/2" bolts with very large washers on top. I was using carriage bolts because of sliding loads in the bed, but regular bolts are so much easier and really don't seem to catch loads that often when sliding something in the bed.
don't think styleside and Flareside fasteners will be compatible (or cooperative) Flarside may be shorter.
Amen!
Guys, I've made some changes to my web site, but many more are needed in order to make the Body Mount page reasonably usable. And I'm finding this to be a very confusing/complex issue that I'd like to get sorted and documented once and for all.

That's what are in there now, so I guess they need to stay if I don't want to spring for the OEM bolts. What do modern Ford trucks use?

If to me, I know but I want to try and use a LB style side floor and bolt on flare side side panels to it.
But that is a bit down the road.
