ok i am replacing the stock exhaust manifolds on my 1990 f150 302 with hooker long tubes. should i replace the studs as well? and how ugly are they to take out?
The headers should come with new hardware. If they don't, buy new and replace. As far as difficulty removing old hardware, I have heard horror stories. I have also heard some are a breeze, I would use PB Blaster or other similar product. Hopefully that will make removal easier.
I had Hooker long-tube headers on my '90 302 and I hated them. They ruined my low-end pulling power. I took 'em off after about 10K miles. Fair warning.
Tri-Ys are better for low-end, but I was too cheap at the time to get them. Be sure to get better gaskets than what comes with the headers, those won't last very long.

The exhaust ports are exactly the same. Both engines use E7 heads.

Experience in our shop (we work on 10s of vehicles weekly) shows that, on average, you'll encounter a bolt issue almost half the time - higher percentages for vehicles from the "rust belt".
