Hi guys, new here looking for help with fuel pump. I have a 1998 Explorer Sport with the 4.0 in it and have never had trouble with it till now. I have not driven it much for the last two years due to battling lung cancer but I am starting to get around now and driving again. I drove it to town about three weeks ago (about eight miles) . When I come out to go home and it would not start. Not getting fuel. Called and had it towed to the shop. The shop calls two days later and said they could not find anything wrong with it. I went and picked it up , drove it for a few weeks and it done it again. Called tow truck and towed it home this time and it started right off and drove it off the tow truck. My question is what would make the fuel pump cut out but come back on by jarring it around loading it? Bad pump, bad ground or maybe the fuel relay? I thought maybe leaving it set so much over the last couple of years may have something to do with it. Thanks.
A bad winding in the pump motor can do this. That's why when a pump won't run, you can smack the gas tank with a 2x4 and it will come on. Sounds like pump motor failing.

Thanks for the info. I have let the fuel run low just in case I had to drop the tank off. Maybe I will just replace the pump. Got to start somewhere. Thanks again.
Anyone know if I can access my fuel pump for replacement on my 1999F250 Super Duty 4X2 Crew cab 172" wheel base 8' bed )6.8 v10 4spd electronic) by removing the bed. I tried the 2 by 4 agains the gas tank -no luck. I want to replace the fuel pump by removing the bed for access, but I think that I may have heard that the pump is under the passengers rear seat and removing the bed will not give full access. Help please?
