We are starting to work on our wiring on the old truck, getting back to the original cloth wiring harness and good soldered connections/heat shrink instead of the crimp on type/bare wire deal. I picked up a good Weller iron at Fry's that should work well, but how about solder type?
I am thinking a good Rosin Core Solder 60/40, but should I go with lead or lead-free with silver. Which one would give the best connection and hold up the best?
I doubt if you can even find solder with lead any more.
It is readily available. Try Amazon. Best place is a flea market or a swap meet. Usually $1 for what is left of a one pound roll. Just make sure it is clearly marker 60/40 Rosin core.,...jack
Lead-free should be used for any water pipe project.
Silver is an excellent conductor but it heats up fast and is more brittle than the others. How are you heating the solder ? An electric soldering iron would be my first choice. My 2 cts.
