92 5.8l e150 is surging at idle. This started after I replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor and fuel filter for a buddy that has no mechanical skills at all.The old parts had been on there for a very long time. It's driving me crazy that I can't figure it out.It ran fine when I test drove it and didn't act up until he drove it about 35 miles.I did find a vac line that was totally rotten and replaced it but no change.Surely it's something simple but it's driving me crazy.
First thing, I would get 6 feet of 5/32" vacuum line, and Replace All the old, dry-rotted rubber line. It's the ones you don't see that are bad once you pull the old (20+ years) lines.
Generally, A leaking vacuum line will cause a high idle, but it can also cause surging. A bad IAC can cause surging at idle. A dirty EGR valve can also cause surging.
The EGR can be checked and cleaned, the IAC can be cleaned, but just better to replace with new.
Here's a Link to all the tests for all the sensors.
One question, did you check the base timing (with spout removed) after you replaced all the plugs/wires/rotor/cap??
