1989 E350 Box Truck Speedometer Problem

When I bought this unit some years ago, the speedo worked for a while, then slowly began to jitter while dropping in value while actual speed remained steady. it would eventually stop altogether, typically after 10-20 miles (sometimes less) of driving. The speedo has since seized altogether, and I installed a unit from a salvage yard. The replacement doesn't work either, and I suspect I may have damaged the cable somehow. I found I need a bit of slack behinf the cluster to be able to move it out of the dash enough to get my had to the release tab on the cable, so I worked some slack into the dash by pushing slack into the engine bay from under the truck, then getting under the hood and pulling up on the cable with one hand and pushing into the firewall with my other hand. I noticed the cable passes through some kind of cylindrical device located a foot or two downstream from the speedo head which has an unused electrical connection on it.

My question is this: can I use a cable the goes directly from the tranny to the speedo, or do I have to go through the cylindrical device?

Edit: I verified that the replacement speedo IS working, so its definitely cable or sensor.

I picked up a cable from Auto Zone (click here)

However, it does not fit the sensor adapter assembly installed in the tranny. Here is a photo pf the original speedo cable connections, including the cruise control sensor assembly. I am deleting the cruise sensor assembly since this vehicle never had cruise control.

I do not have a photo of the speed sensor assembly available. I'll post that later if I get a chance.

Ok, I pulled the sensor assembly, and here is what it looks like broken down. The gear looks to be in great shape, no worn teeth that I could see. After looking at this, I think a new sensor assembly is my answer. Anyone else agree?
