Exclamation Smoke coming from gauge!?!

Hi all, I previously posted that I was having trouble with my gas gauge. Well, I had a spare gas gauge lying around and I decided to swap them. Once they were swapped, I went and hooked up the dash cluster and turned the truck on. Almost instantly smoke started coming out of the gas gauge (it also wasn't reading properly). It got me to thinking that maybe the voltage regulator on the dash (the small metal box) is bad. Anyone have any input on this? It would be great to get my gauges up and properly running. I hate not knowing how much gas I have. Thanks!

That's freaky and scary. Never had that happen. Almost always when my instrument regulator was faulty, the gauges were off by a quarter or so. Sounds like a faulty printed circuit board. If your old gauge wasn't smoking, I'd ditch the replacement before you have a fire.

Apparently, from what I've been told it can be... bad float, bad gauge, bad circuit, incorrect wiring, etc.

I just swapped the gas gauge into another dash housing I had, to see if it was the circuits and I started up the truck. Instantly came smoke and a line from the circuit was fried.

Fried circuit. Grrrrrr...
