Looking for other folks that have been doing their home work on buying a new truck to reflex upon this topic.
I am not loyal to any MFG here, but the F150 is on my short list.
1. Tundra- Too Stark, too expensive, too much of a pig.
2. Ram- I may need to revisit the eco diesel for my needs but in general nice truck but do nothing for me.
3. Chev 1500 silverado. -In general I like the f150 more by miles. What I dont know is why I would buy this over an F150?
So What do I need in a truck? Basically I need the something like the new colorado diesel that will pull. I need something small to drive to the office and costco everyday that gets good fuel economy, yet still has the grunt to pull my small tractor around on a dump trailer for working on my houses. ( I dont have the dump trailer yet, but a 5x10 landscape)
For the price and capabilities, we seem to be defaulting to a full size truck.
Would love to hear what others have to say.
What's your estimate of daily driving versus towing? Either of the ecoboost engines are beasts when it comes to towing; especially if you're at altitude. They're also great daily drivers. I also like the 5L V8 for its simplicity.
The. Chevy/GMC get points for interior and ride quality, but I'll tell you the F-150 is pretty cush for a pickup IMO.
I think either of the ecoboost engines or the 5L will meet or exceed the Silverado in pure towing capabilify
What will be the weight of the trailer full? You're considering a diesel, are you considering an F-150 ecoboost or a V-8?
What sort of MPG's are you expecting from your truck loaded and unloaded?
Not sure to be honest. I know the ford tows around 9k. and that should be suffice for what I need. using the 90/10 rule, 90% of the time this will just be a commuter. I am considering the 3.5 ecoboost.

I drove the 5.3 Silverado today. I seems to be relatively gutless IHMO. I think the ECO Boost 3.5 blows it away. I also hate the chev interior. It just seems so darn "cheap" to me for some reason. Stupid or not, I hate the door handles, I hate the center dash, I thought the left arm rest and center console arm rest were at different elevations which I found uncomfortable. The look and feel of the buttons and switches are reminiscent of the AC delco days, and not attractive to me. I love the tilt and telescoping steering wheel though. At this moment, the chev would need to be a heck of a lot cheaper for a price point purchase than the ford. However, it seems ultra expensive to me for such a 2nd rate truck (which is just my opinion.)
RAM 1500 Diesel Forum for more info ont he ram eco-diesel. the 2014 and some 2015 have had many common growing pains, mostly revolving around the diesel emissions requirements and some around the oil coolers.
The concensus with the eco diesel is if you do alot of highwa driving it's great, if you mostly do city driving or short drives it may not be the best motor. This is due to the emissions requirements and the "Regens" that are required and need the heat and drive time to complete.
Just saw a Ford cheer-leading video with 2.7EB vs 5.3 vs 3.0d on a 7% grade rolling 30-50 mph test towing 7000#. The Ford did it in 14 seconds, the Chevy in 16 seconds and the Ram in 21 seconds. I'm not a huge fan of single test stuff like this, but just one more way the Ford Ecoboost motors are showing off its power.
Something not normally discussed, but was a deal breaker with me several years ago, when
looking at the different manufacturers;
the Ram has a 10 way power seat for the driver, but only a 6 way seat for the passenger.
First time my wife sat in one, she spent less then a minute and said this will never do.
I just checked their web site and it looks like this 6 way passenger seat is still standard in
all the trim levels with electrically controlled seats.
Another cheap cop-out which American manufacturers have pulled for years.
Like the "front only" disc brakes starting in the 60s and going for decades.
Then the "front only" ABS, when it started being installed.
Have you ever slammed on your brakes, going downhill in a truck (Bronco for me)
in the snow, with just front ABS? Yeah, someone didn't think that though.
The passenger really doesn't need to go up and down. Up and down is important for visibility of the driver. I can't even tell you what all ten ways are. I actually hate power seats. They are so darn slow. If two people always are sharing a car the memory seats can be nice though.

+1. I can't even think of ten ways to adjust a seat. Sheesh. Forward, backward, up, down, tilt. I call that 4 ways is enough.
yes, but 5 doesn't sell as well as 10. Soon they'll have power headrest for 16 (up, down, tilt forward, tilt back, and some sort of bolstering adjustment for two more)
