Off topic: advice you hear

So I work part time for advance pushing parts on the weekend (15years now). Guy that I work with told a customer to dry his K&N with compressed air after cleaning. Hummm. I distinctly remember instructions say not to. He also told another customer who bought carb cleaner not to use too much with engine running cause it would burn the pistons out. Well what about that. Glad I overheard that so I will refrain from using excess myself lol.

See... stuff like that is the reason I became a mechanic. Had a guy tell me one time the best way to break in a fresh engine is with diesel instead of oil... didnt bother to ask if he had tried it.

The oil that comes in the k&n cleaning kits can and will mess up alot of mass air flow sensors across the board. Maybe thats where that came from but the carb cleaner thing rofl...

I once heard that removing a thermostat will cause your engine block to crack from too much cold water flow. No telling what that guy was smoking

"buy a dodge diesel. the cummings gets such good fuel mileage you will only have to fill the tank once every 3 months"

to which i said: of course you only have to fill the tank once every 3 months. you drive it for 3 days, then it sits at the dodge dealership for 2 1/2 months with them test driving it trying to fix the damn thing.
6 year old truck that has spent close to 5 years in the dodge dealer service bays. but he still swears it is the best thing since sliced bread .

I hear dont change your ATF quiet often. That is extremely rampent in my area. ATF must last forever. There may be some merit to that after 150k+ miles or more but the damage is already done. A buddy of mine refuses to service his '05 silverado and has yet to hit 100k. My sportrac got complete flush and will get it again about 150k if i keep it that long. Wifes 09 civic gets it once a year at christmas no matter miles. It only takes 2.5 quarts service change though.

I think the "don't change the ATF" thing came from the whole "power flush" AT service that became a popular way to relieve folks of their money. The power flush would dislodge residue that would not drain out during the service and then cause issues down the road. People got this confused with just a simple fluid/filter change. I know, a friend of ours swears that changing the fluid is bad for the tranny. That's why he had to replace one in his wife's car at just over 100k.

The thing with auto trannies is either power flush them every 75-100k or dont touch them.

The "dislodging" stuff theory, while maybe not 100% false is taken way overboard. What happens is people have something wrong with their trans, so think "lets flush it" and it amplifies the problem instead of curing it. "Changing" the fluid on an automatic is a complete waste of money, you only get like 40% out. All you accomplish is contaminating the fresh fluid you just dumped in. The C6 in my dads 78 has almost 400k on it, has been flushed every 75-100k, shifts like new. Honestly, i had no idea a C6 shifted that great- ever.

i change fluid every 30-35k miles. drain pan, drain converter, and drain cooler and lines.
the way i do it only leaves around a quart in there.
i have 2 E4OD transmissions i do that have over 450k miles on them and they have never been opened.
no trans i serviced ever needed replacing.

some vehicles have a "sealed" transmission that doesn't allow a proper fluid change. such as my volvo. no filter, just a drain plug that empties out 2.5 quarts~. I don't know what they were smoking when they thought of that.

what they were thinking is "make them bring it back to the dealer for service" just like the exploder trans.
problem is people do not read the owners manual and run them until the trans blows, then bitch at ford fo not putting a dipstick to check the trans fluid.

it says rite in the owners manual the trans should be serviced every 30 to 35k miles

but what does the owners manual say for trans service? every one i have ever seen said 30-35k. but i have not looked at any of the newer manuals.

dealer is going to say that because they want to change the trans.
