I recently bought a 1985 F250 with a decent running 460. My original plan was to do as little as possible and resell. Just after getting it a friend gave me a 1992 F350 Dually Cab and Chassis that was used as an oil field roustabout truck. There are a couple things I would really like to do with these two pickups.
1. I would like to take the solid axle out of the F350 and put it in the F250. My biggest concern is if I can change the Dually front to a non Dually so I can use regular rims.
2. The F350 has a 4 speed with OD transmission. I would like to swap that transmission with the F250's 4 speed no OD. Is this complicated at all?
Like I said my original intent was to flip it quick but after I got it I remembered how much I have always liked how these pickups look. So now want to make a hunting pickup I can tow with.
There is no 4 speed with overdrive available for the big trucks. There was a 5 speed zf transmission made in Germany for those trucks. I am getting picky but you need to call it the right thing to avoid confusion. They did make a 4 speed overdrive in the earlier f100's and f150's.
You can take the dually adapters off and change it around to a single wheel frontend. I am not sure of all the parts you need, but I am guessing rotors and wheel studs at the least. You should be able to get rid of the dually adapters easily, they are popular for people converting dually pickups to 4x4(they never made a 4x4 dually pickup, only cab and chassis till the superduties came out).
Maybe the shift **** was off of another pickup. I was going off that. I havent really crawled around it all yet to make sure. It should be a straight forward swap on the Transmissions though right?
I saw where it looked like I could take the adapters off and looked simple but in my experience nothing is ever as simple as it seems when dealing with a Ford. Don't get me wrong I love Fords, always have and always will. They just tend to do weird things sometimes. Anyway I appreciate the help.
Do a web search on the adapters, it's done all the time but I am not sure all you would need.
Yes the trans is a simple swap. You may need to swap floor covers over the trans, but you have the right one in the other truck. One thing is important though; Are both trucks 460 equipped? The 5 speed doesn't have a separate bellhousing, so you need a trans for a 460.
There are some people who have drilled the necessary holes in a 460 trans to mate it to the diesel, but I am not sure if you can drill holes and go the other way and put a diesel trans on a 460.
That dually, being a cab and chassis will have proper dually hubs, not adapters. You will need a set of srw hubs and rotors, which if you have a Dana 50 ttb you already have.
