Yep, if those two rubber gaskets seal together and make one or the other pucker you can get a really good flow of Texas Gold all over the place. This is however a lesson that you usually only have to learn one time and one time only.

Another cause could be if when you pulled off the old filter the rubber filter gasket stuck to the truck rather than came off with the filter.
I only use Motorcraft filters and 50% of the time the gasket stays stuck on the filter housing requiring removal prior to installing new filter. Just part of the process for me.
I refuse to use Fram for anything and only use Motorcraft on my Fords, but somebody said that the new motorcraft oil filters are identical to the Fram ones and are manufactured at the same place. Any truth in this.

I have no idea if it is true or not; but I use Motorcraft filters in my truck and will continue to do so.
