Oil filter leak

I have a motorcraft filter on and it has a slight drip when the engine turns off, maybe 3 drops...filter is tight...anyone else have this issue? I oil up the new gasket and make sure the old one is gone

Only thing i can think of is a ding in the mounting surface is it just on this filter or does it always do it? If its just this filter put a new one on and see if it goes away.

If it got overtighten it might of warped the matting surface of the oil filter housing, usually you can hammer it straight.

I used to have that problem with the Motorcraft filters, and other brands, mating surface was burr free, looked/felt good. Never could get them to stop a light drip/weep around the top. Then when i stepped up to the big boy filters my drippy, weeping filter problem went away

Lil bigger than the Motorcraft FL1995

The oring on this filter has more of a beveled edge and is taller, softer, blue, tennis shoe sole like compound. All the other filters have that square edge black hard rubber oring. Sides of filter is bone dry 11 months later

Yup, I have the same problem too. Mine loosens if it is only hand-tight. I have to tighten it lightly with a filter wrench.

Back in '95 I was in charge of the maintenance for an AT&T division, we had a ton of these trucks. We were told by someone at Ford to use a strap wrench to tighten them and stop the leaks. He called out a number of rotations after the gasket contacts the base, I don't remember for sure but I wanna say it was 1 1/4. I've heard they changed the gasket from what was on the early filter so they didn't require as much torque to seal. Nowadays I just turn them by hand as hard as I can and have had no problems, but I don't count the turns so I have no hard number to suggest.

I like the idea of that big boy filter having a by-pass filter built in, I'm gonna try to find the micron ratings and compare to the 1995.

I couldn't find the micron rating on Fleegaurd's site, but from a cross-reference it indicated it has a nominal 35 micron rating, not impressed. If you have the official specs on it I'd love to see.

1 1/4 would really surprise me. 1/4 turn after contact is the number that I have seen over the years and I would think that to go a full turn beyond that would make it awful tough to get off.

I've not had a problem with the FL-1995 filters but I mostly use the Mobil M1-601A filter and have never had an issue with them sealing or backing off.

If I don't snug mine up with a wrench after going hand tight it will drip as well. One time I checked it 2000km after installing it double hand tight and it was loose so now it gets the wrench.

I almost burst out laughing. 3 drops off the end of the oil filter... Seems nothing to me. I get a tea spoon leak out the back of the valley every time I park after driving. I do not park where I do not want oil on the ground. Been this way for over 10 years and I have never truly 'found' the leak into the valley. As for your oil filter. Hand tight is not snug enough. Oil wrench and tap once. But.... Have a good oil wrench and hammer when you are ready to take it off when ready to put a new one on.

only concerned about the drips because it's on a driveway..other than that I dont mind..let's see if the wrench solves this

I'm not sure about the FL-1995 but my Mobil 1 filter is +1 1/2 turns after contact IIRC. It is very snug when all said and done and has never dripped.
