Prepping for more power

I'm planning to add some power in the near future to improve driveabilty all around and better tow our 32' fifth wheel.
I have the 6637 intake and the 6.0 trans cooler. For the monitoring I have Torque Pro so am planning to add gauges for egt and fuel pressure. No plans for bigger injectors.

My questions are:
Will a Walker BTM or a muffler delete on a stock exhaust shed enough egt or do I need to go to a 4"?
Are there other gauges I need to consider as well.

Thanks
Wink

If your power plans take you into defueling territory (over 22 PSI boost), the math (and my experience) says the 3 1/2" pipe is the "choke point". An otherwise stock truck with a big CAI, red line mod, and 4" exhaust can hit the defuel wall - then chipping will take one as high as 30 PSI boost with those mods.

Thanks for the info! Based on the current configuration I'm at 15.9 boost is where I max out with the red line plugged. Just out of curiosity what would a 4in exhaust give in boost improvement prior to chipping?

There's a red vacuum line going to the back of your turbo that activates the wastegate when boost builds up to a certain point. Unplugging the diaphram on the turbo and plugging that line can see modest boost in turbo boost.

A 4" exhaust won't help with boost, it just helps on getting all the gasses out faster keeping things cooler.

According to John Woods on the dyno a straight threw muffler will give you as much as a 4 inch exhaust. That's what he told me, on the other hand I do have a 4 inch system. This was to answer your question. If you only have 15 pounds of boost i think you have a leak some where.

The "modest" gain with the red line mod is about 4-5 PSI boost on a stock truck.

15 PSI boost? Like Bonanza35 said, you have a leak in the intake or the exhaust. I'd use your money for that first. How are you getting your boost number, OBDII or gauge?

Checked for leaks, 1 very small on the cold side (resolved). No soot on the up pipes behind the turbo. 1 small spot on passenger side manifold to up pipe and 2 small spots on passenger side manifold (fingernail sized).

Test run still had only 15.6 boost. Boost is slow to build and requires a very aggressive right foot to hold speed on hills or when towing.

I have:
Riff Raff boots and plenum inserts
New EBP and ICP both OEM
New TPS (Napa)
IPR rebuilt yesterday
had the tranny checked and was I good health

I use Torque Pro for readings (all seem to be in the ranges) and a friend ran AE a couple months ago same result (Buzz test and CCT were normal).

I'm 150 miles from 200k and want to get it right before moving ahead!

Plenums can leak at the block also. If those are stock up pipes they are leaking. I didn't see any soot on mine either but when I took them off one side fell off in my hand.

Can a leak on up pipes be seen with a scan tool? With no soot, how would you tell?

Scan tool won't show any special place of leaks. You just got to go by what it should be. If they have never been serviced there leaking. The metal on the up pipes at the donut also wears out with ridges in it. The factory sealant on the plenums is thin and leaks after time also. If you do this put a good amount of sealant on there. And use the ford stuff. I bought mine from RR.

Make a boost leak detector and check that way if you didn't, you didn't say how you found your leaks. Its good measure to do bellowed up pipes regardless.
I also recommend dual egt gauges and a fuel pressure gauge 0-100 psi

I used a boost detector pressurized to 15-18 psi, hooked up past the CCV.

I reattached the red line today and the results surprised me.
Red Line attached the boost peaked at 15.7 with several other 15.2's
Red Line plugged the boost peaked at 15.9 as before.

Would that point to a bad waste gate or waste gate solenoid? Or does that solidify a leak?

Thanks for the gauge opinion as well!

Leak, stuck EBPV, failed wastegate, or a weak turbo. Somewhere in there.

A strong separation of EBP and MAP indicates the exhaust side is good. Linked up EBP and MAP can indicate exhaust leaks or a clogged intake - so the scan tool can help to a certain degree. There is speculation a bouncy EBP indicates intake leaks or a compromised turbo, but we need more concrete proof on this before we call it.
