82 351w need help

I have a 351w that will run good for about 10 minutes then the oil pressure gauge will go down all the way and will start to hear a clicking sound in the engine also it wouldn't start back up until it is cold. I'm not sure what to do. Could use some help thank you

Have you checked to see that you have the proper amount of oil in the engine?

Well, the bad news is we had a guy on here a couple of weeks ago with similar symptoms of the oil pressure dropping after it ran a bit. Turns out the screen in the oil pickup was clogged and the oil pump was running out of oil.

However, yours clicks and won't start again until it is cold. When you say "won't start" do you mean it'll turn over but not fire? Or won't even turn over? And, where's the click coming from? Can you tell?

I would rig in a real oil pressure gauge down in beside the oil filter(where the factory sending unit is). If the pressure drops like the factory gauge is telling you, it sounds like you are going to have to get into the engine or get another engine.

Usually what happens is the engine is cold and the oil is thick, so you have pressure. As it warms up the oil gets thin and starts running out of the bearings in the engine because there is too much clearance. This drops the pressure and starves the top of the engine for oil. You may hear a faint heavy knocking along with the ticking, especially if you put it in gear at idle.

I agree with Dave.

But, that doesn't account for it not starting unless cold. And I can see a couple of possibilities for that. One is fuel and one is electrical. On the fuel, it may be that the accelerator pump is bad and, with the choke off when the engine is warm the air/fuel ratio might be too lean to start. So, pull the air cleaner, get up so you can look down the throat of the carb, and open the throttle briskly. You should see two streams of gas shoot into the carb. If so, the accelerator pump works.

On the electrical, it may be that your ignition is failing when the engine is hot. However, I doubt this. Anyway, if the fuel test doesn't show the accelerator pump bad, then when the engine is hot pull a spark plug wire, insert an old plug, and lay the plug on the block. When you crank the engine you should have a blue spark.

Aren't the lifters being starved of oil, so the valves aren't opening again until the engine cools?

Yes, the lifters run on oil and wouldn't pump up without it. But, I thought the range of lift on them is small enough that the valves would still open to some extent. However, that's my expectation.

That's correct. When you stop the engine, the lifters don't bleed down and close every valve in the engine. The oil in the lifter just serves as a minor adjustment to keep the lash at zero.
