While backing my truck up a hill with a small trailer on it the truck suddenly lost power and overheated. I recently installed a new MLPS and wiring harness and wiring harness to solenoids. The truck started getting where I had too move shifter sometimes to get it to start. I know installed the mlps like it supposed to be by lining up the marks. After truck cooled down and it restarted it kept trying to die when I put it in reverse, it also will try to die coming to a stop at a light. A big puff of smoke comes out when I try to hold accelerator down to keep it from dying. It doesn't always try to die but it does it at least 3-4 times while stopping and definetly in reverse. It will sit for a minute then you can watch rpm's start going down. I've tried adjusting the thumbwheel on column to align indicator, didn't help. I've read everything from tranny filter falling off, to adjusting shift cable, possible solenoid failure, they were replaced 4 years ago, possible injector failure, replaced 4 years ago. I do have a bad ignition switch but it works to start truck but you can turn it without key,the ring on outside will turn all the way around. Also the shifter od button works but no light to tell me me if it's on or off. Any other suggestions?
Ok I think I can narrow it down. It died for good on way home wouldn't start but turned over. Took advice from on here about jumping fuel shut off solenoid and truck cranked up and ran. Able to get it home. Tried this afternoon to go get parts (Ignition switch
), hooked it up and the glow plugs quit working. Yes I removed the wire from solenoid first. Checked all the fuses and fuse links on passenger side fender they are ok. Did my controller just give out? Checking Ford sites I get several different mlps to fit truck. F5TP-7F293-AA was original and I replaced with SW5063, but ford says SW5063,SW5977 or SW5978 Which is the right one?
It wasn't controller. Replaced it and Gp's and ignition switch on the lower part of column. Then replaced solenoid because no start or turn over issue unless turn key on then jump wire to start. I can now start sometimes but sometimes have to move shift lever in and out of park and it will start. So I'm thinking mlps is bad after a year old. Anyway to test that? Is there something inside of tranny out of wack with park pawl? TPS is 4-5 years old could it do this? I do get erratic shifts sometimes.
