EGR Valve

I have a 99 F250 V10 135K miles on it. It was used for towing all the time. The Engine light code (Auto Zone) said EGR valve. Cost for new one is $75 or try to clean it with Carb cleaner. Any ideas.

I am getting 7-9 mpg in the city, not towing. I have 285-75-16 tires and 410 rear gears. auto trans. I drive about 5 miles to work each day. Is this normal or did I buy a wore out junky truck? Please help!

EGR Valve

7-9 is what I get with my '01 V10 with only 10K miles on it. In the city.

On the highway, unloaded, 4-hour trip at least, I get near 16.

The EGR is probably full of carbon. Clean it, and it should start moving again.

However, if the diaphram in the EGR valve is bad, it will need to be replaced. Check it with a vacuum pump and see if it leaks down by itself.

Krewat,

Can you exspand on how to check the the valve with a vacuum pump. I am having the same problem and would rather try all options before replacing with a new valve.

There are these "might-mite" hand vacuum pumps that have a vacuum guage on them. Hook it up to the EGR valve, and pull about 10 inches of vacuum. Wait a few minutes. If it leaks down to 0 right away or even slowly, the diaphram in the EGR valve is bad, and it needs to be replaced.

Or, just take a piece of aquarium air hose and suck on it. STick your tongue on the end and feel the vacuum. If you feel the vacuum disappear, then the diaphram is leaking.

Does that help?

Take it off and have it tested. I spent a day trying to get one off of a friend cammero because it was so far in and that was not the problem. It was a vaccume leak somewhere that we never found. Point here is read the description of the code and it say EGR then smalled could be about 100 other crap.
