87 E350 PS Gear Box Install

Hi guys,

New to FORDs. Recently bought an old 87 Club Wagon for cheap. I am planning to slowly turn it into a decent camper.

I am replacing the steering gear and I am stuck...Also it was turning dark so I had to stop working, my arms are turning into noodles.

The new steering gear does not line up with the bolt holes when I put the box back into the rag joint.

If I bolt the gearbox first then the flex coupler is about 4 inches away.

Can I have pushed the shaft in?

How is it done?

Do you bolt in the gear box first on the frame and pull the shaft in?

I got the right part for sure.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your van probably has a collapsable steering column. I can't find an image of the intermediate shaft of an '87, but every shaft I've ever seen is designed to collapse to protect the driver in a collision.

Have you tried yanking it back out into position? Can you see the section where the shaft telescopes in? Might need a little penetrating oil to get it loosened up.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm going to check after work today.

So do it install the box and pull the flex coupled with the whole shaft into the gear box?

You are right.

In my haste, I pulled out the shaft all the way out. And out came this flat metal piece (about 3" x 3/4"). It is has an arch.

I am assuming that it goes into the notch on the shaft itself to help center it.

Do I just put the peice in the notch with the arch facing outward and keep it there while I put the shaft back in? There is no fastener.. it just sits on top.

Is this correct? Any help would be appreciated.

Here it is. I had to remove everything again.

Looks like that's where it goes. Was it welded on there at one point or does it just simply sit on top while I put it back in?

And what would one without a welder do? JB?

It looks to me like the metal piece exists to provide a little resistance so the telescoping portion of the shaft doesn't just fall out when disconnected from the gear. If it were my van I would put it back together without the piece and not worry about it. Or just slide it in with the piece in place; it won't go anywhere unless you remove the shaft again.

If you're concerned about it you'll want to replace the shaft. I wouldn't be though.

Thanks Tom. I got everything installed.

I had to stop for the night, but I noticed that the P/S is completely gone. Is this normal after a gearbox swap? I plan on jacking the front up and bleeding with engine off.

Also noticed while in park, when I try to move the wheels left and right, it struggles due to no P/S and when I release the steering wheel, I can hear a hiss from what I guess is the P/S pump. Assuming that this is normal.

Thanks again.

That's not normal, but they can do some strange things until the system is bled of air. You're supposed to fill the reservoir, start the engine, and move the wheel from full lock left to right.

If that doesn't work something is wrong hydraulically.

Bleeding the system fixed the issue. The wheel is turning good.

I feel like the new gearbox is a defect. Steering is sticking when turning.

Going to take it to alignment to make sure I didn't goof on the steering linkage.

Thanks Tom.

Can you elaborate more? Is it not returning to center on its own, or is the power assist being funny?

It is not centering on its own.

When I make a turn it seems like it is sticking.

I sent it to the alignment shop and was told toe is a little off spec because there is no adjusting sleeve on the passenger side.

It drove a bit better But was still not returning to center.

A couple of hours ago, I loosened the gearbox adjusting nut about 1/4 turn. Now it returns to center when making left turns only, but it is very weak coming back.

When making a right it doesn't return at all.

Can over torqued crown nuts on the steering linkage cause this?

I'm leaning towards bad gearbox.
