Steering Box Question

I have a 96 f150. The lash adjuster on the box has a torx tip instead of a flat head. I noticed once by backing the adjuster out the steering play seemed to tighten up. After removing the box for a weld on the frame later, I adjusted the box carefully by hand on the bench. At this point, it worked as normal, clockwise removed play. After putting it all together, I have much more slop than ever and I believe all the air has come out. Does this work in reverse or did I not crank down enough? 13-18 in/lbs on the steering shaft isn't all that much. I didn't want to mash the sector by over-tightening.
