My truck is a 2002 7.3 with 270k and still running the original injectors. I figure I'm at the point that I need to be proactively planning to replace them but I'm at a loss as to whether to replace them with new stock injectors or if I would benefit from doing something different.
The truck has a rebuilt and hardened transmission (transgo shift kit, billet torque convertor and some other stuff was done at the rebuild), an Adrenaline HPOP, hutch/harpoon mods with pre-pump filter, PHP Phoenix flash chip, Di-Procol gauges (EGT, Boost and Trans temp), MBRP 4" turbo back exhaust, 6637 intake air filter, bellowed up pipes, CCV mod and a recently rebuilt turbo with the Banks style wheel.
I use the truck almost exclusively for towing a 20' bumper pull trailer and tractor that weighs probably 8,000 pounds or for hauling up to 1700 pounds in the bed. I get TERRIBLE fuel mileage towing (like 8 - 10), regardless of which tune I'm using, although the power is pretty good. I would like better towing mileage and reduced EGT's, if I can get them. The EGT's aren't super high right now but they will bump up to 1200 - 1300 on a grade if I'm not careful.
So, given all that, what would you guys recommend? The one thing I do know is that I want to replace the injectors with new, not rebuilt. Other than that, I'm open to any suggestions and input.
i will be removing my injectors and sending them to Rosewood to get freshened up within the next month. the price is a whole lot cheaper than buying new,(about 1/2 the price of new) and they come with a guarantee.
You probably wont get any better MPGS out of new injectors. You might be able to lower EGTs a little if you go to a single shot injector. It will dump the fuel faster. Others can explain it better than me. Either way I would get new. I did remans and regret it. I have gone through 18 injectors (lifetime warranty) and need to replace another.
Another way to lower EGT is a bigger exhaust housing on the Turbo. I.E. get the exhaust out faster. I am going to be installing a van turbo on mine. I have the 6/6 billet wheel that I am running in my stocker right now. I will put it in there.
You could also do better intercooler or water/meth injection. There a guy on there that tows all the time and swears by it. I want to try it some time.
I have been told by several people that there really isn't a good way to rebuild an injector and it's better to just buy new. I figure that over 300k miles (give or take) that the price difference really isn't all that much so I'd rather just spend the extra to be on the safe side.
who did you get your rebuilt injectors from Jason??
from everything i have seen here Rosewood has a 100% satisfaction reputation.
the thing with rebuilds is they have to be done rite. and then balance tested to make sure they all pop at the factory pressures. a lot of companies do not do that. they clean them up and maybe grind the tips down a bit and call them good to go.
Rosewood completely disassembles them, inspect the parts, and replace anything that does meet factory specs.
they also build performance injectors.
I got them trough Unlimited Diesel Performance. He works closely with Gearhead Automotive. They both have been mentioned several times in articles for providing the sticks and tunes on featured trucks or trucks that do well in competitions.
I have had a couple people tell me they had problems with the rebuilds. They ended up trading them in on new through their builder and they say all is well.
