Hey guys. I'm new to the truck life. I had a 2006 for focus for three years and now I have a 2006 Ford F-150 and I want to do a oil change, I purchased it about three months ago. It's a 2006 f150 lariat, 5.4 triton. With 80,000 miles and only one other owner.
Anyway guys this is my question, I know there's all kinds of oil out there, Mobil 1, Castrol, exon and dozens of others lol. But what kind should I use?!?!?! I do live near a Walmart and Autozone and Advanced auto parts. Any advice would help guys!! Thank you!!
In my opinion, Motorcraft is one of the best oils out there for these trucks for the price. It can be found at Wal-Mart in 5 quart jugs for about $18 around me. Our 5.4s take 7 quarts. After 7 quarts of 5W-20 and a FL-820S Motorcraft oil filter, it's about $31 after tax for me.
If you do decide to use a different oil though, at least use a Motorcraft filter. You'd be amazed how many 5.4 engines have failed due to aftermarket oil filters clogging oil passages and ruining the internals.
not to highjack this thread but when i owned my F250 7.3 PSD we would order our filters through fleetfilter.com

i think the motorcraft filters are just rebranded WIX filters. part number: 51372
Motorcraft filters are made by Purolator and are an excellent filter for the price. If the oil meets the current SN specification it is a good oil. As for my personal choice I use Pennzoil conventional oil. Because of the results of testing that PQIA had on 5w20 oils. For filters Motorcraft, Fram tough guard or ultra and Napa Gold/Wix are all good.
Motorcraft oil and filter. And stay with the weight recommendation - don't be 'smart' and go up to 10W-30 or whatever. I 'discovered' the Motorcraft synthetic blend when I was trying different oil in a Saturn VUE 3.0L V6 a few years ago. I liked it better than anything else I had tried, including Mobil 1 and Royal Purple. Start-up noise was greatly reduced, for example. Along the way I bought the new 2007 F-150 and there was never a doubt as to what I would use. The truck gets very light use so I change the oil every November - usually no more than 2500 miles. It darkens a little but still has transparency. It is also the slipperiest used oil coming out of an engine I have ever experienced.
advance auto sells motorcraft products, and if you order online with a coupon code and pick up in store you can save some coin (on the filters, they don't discount oil unfortunately). it was a must for me doing oil changes on my 6.0l powerstroke!
I know I'm a few days late, but I'll second the Motorcraft oil and Filters. I am a long time Ford owner, having worked for Ford at the dealership level. Have been driving them since about 72 with a Torino. Most of my Ford have lived at least 250K and then I would give them to my kids. They would drive them a few more years. Firm believer in Motorcraft.
I'm with the rest & will have to say Motorcraft as well! Also, pick up an oil-filter wrench (no more than $5 at auto store). I could unscrew the wrench from the bottom, my fat hand had to go thru the hood. Watch out for the fan blade too, it's sharp as hell.
Been running everything from pennzoil to castrol to mobil 1 synthetic all with mobil 1 oil filters have 160,000 km on my 2007 5.4 f150 no ticks or problems of any kind here. I run about 10,000 km between oil changes. My 2011 f350 with 6.2 gets the same thing. I change twice a year. For winter they both get 0w20.
