rear dif.

my 1978 ranchero i'm told has a 9" dif. i want to change it. will the complete rear end from a 1987 Grand Marquis fit and work.

if i remember correctly the Grand Marquis uses a 8.8 rear.

i would stick with the 9 inch, it is a better rear, and has much better aftermarket support.

Your '78 has coils and control arms as does the Grand Ma. What are the chances all that stuff lines up between a '78 and an '87?

While the 8.8 may have discs and might be marginally more efficient due to a slightly different ring and pinion engagement, as per the prior post, you can get just about anything you want for a 9 ratio wise, disc wise, axle, etc etc. And it all bolts right in....

1975/76 Ranchero (Torino) & 1977/79 Ranchero (LTD II): The 9" was the only available rear axle.
