rear ends?

soooo i have a rear end out of a 1978 f-150 here thats a 9" and my dad put 4:11's in it and its limited slip (positrac?)

i was thinking it would be sweet to have that under my 1994 f-150 with the 351... but i remember about the abs/speed sensor think someone mentioned a while ago, but does anyone know how similar these rear ends are? im assuming the 94 has a 9" so would i be able so pull everything out and swap the gears and everything?

i dont understand any of this haha

i know they have an 8.8" but i always thought those were for the 302s where they not? so i dont know, im guessing the 351 still has a 9" rear end? i need to go look at it but its at the shop right now

92+ 4x4's have 9" rear ends still dont they? i know my 1990 302 4x4 had a 9" rear end

Well if you can take a look, A 9 inch has bolts holding on your cover at the front of the axle (where the driveshaft connects to the axles yoke. And a 8.8 has a rear side cover bolted on to the rear side of the axle.

I'm not sure what they all used these axles on. This stuff is to new for my liking. But my 93 4x4 with a 351W has a 9 inch axle.

The last year for the 9" was 1986 but it was optional from 1983? The 8.8 was the replacement axle since the 9" couldn't be modified to accept a speed sensor. The 8.8 also has a better rolling resistance than the 9". In the late 90's they went to a 9.7 axle in the trucks.

It will work up to a 91 truck but you lose RABS. 92 and up is where you have problems since they use an electronic speedo.

I still like Sherm's story were he let a cute girl in front of him in, and then rear-ended her. He said the shared a good laugh afterwards.

9 Inch: 1957-1987 R.I.P.

8.8: 1983/

The 9 inch is 10 times the rear end the 8.8 is.

The 8.8 is cheaper for Ford to build.

The 8.8, Dana: 44, 60, 70, 80's have removable covers on the back of the housing, the 9 inch doesn't. The 9 inch has 10 bolts that holds the carrier (pumpkin) to the housing. Removing those 10 bolts allows the entire guts of the rear end to come out as an assembly. This is called (un-officially) a "Drop Out" rear end.

Note: While never used in trucks, there an 8 inch drop out, too. Midsized Fords from 1962 thru 1979 used the 8 inch. Midsize: Fairlane, Mustang, Falcon, Comet, Montego, Torino, Cougar, Granada, Monarch, Fairmont...yadda yadda yadda.

good answer there , impressive even to your standards. So what 9 inch rear ends could I also use for lets say a 1953 light F-series Ford?

can I just easily bolt on a 57-72 9inch, or will others work without majior differences?
