Haven't been here in a while, life threw me some curve *****. So, I've picked up a new project, and shelved my 76 build for now, I need a crew cab lol.
So, I picked up a 1989 f350 crew cab long box, its fairly straight besides the wrinkles in the drivers side. Its an 7.3 idi truck, got it with the ats turbo kit.not sure if the engine runs, there's no starter, and I'm told its bad.
I'm doing a complete drivetrain swap, so no need for any ford stuff anyways.
I'm using an intercooled 92 w250 as a parts truck. I'm gonna fab up the brackets to use the w250 mounts, and probably move the trans xmember to mount the dodge trans for now. Gonna go with a built 47rh later I think, haven't finalized anything yet. Gonna use the 46re that came with the w250 for now, its built to the hilt with all kinds of good stuff, just wish it had lockup.
I'm using an intercooled 92 w250 as a parts truck. Getting it loaded and unloaded with no front axle was fun..... Thank god for good friends.
Anyways, on to the pics.

Reason: forgot stuff.
Gets great gas mileage right now, zero in fact :-). The cap is gonna go, I am gonna trade that one, and the blue one for a white one. Or just slap the blue one on. Lol. Either way, I'm not using the white one, it came with the truck.
The whole stock drivetrain is up for sale. I posted a sale ad for it too, haha. Have a local guy interested in the turbo kit.
I've been searching for a crew that looked good with a bad engine, so I could be into it for very little cash. Pretty hard to find like that. The only things I need so far, body wise, is a stereo, to get the pass side window to roll down (electric), and a stereo/ac bezel. I'll replace the doors on the ds later.
Sure is. Have three guys blowing up my phone about the turbo kit. The rest is up for grabs. Still dunno what's wrong with the engine, had to mess with my brothers pos jeep last night. Hope to start pulling the engine and drivetrain from the dodge this time next week.
If you were curious, here's the difference between a first gen Cummins radiator (front) and the 7.3 idi radiator. The inlets are opposite, but I can work with that. The ford rad is much thicker too. Haven't gotten too much done on it, been working too much.
Well, sold the stock rear axle today, guess I'm stuck with using the Dodge axles, or finding some 3.73 geared axles from another truck. I'm leaning towards the Dodge axles, should be easy to extend the spring perches 2" on either side to bolt onto the Ford. Gonna clean the garage some and start the teardown of the Dodge truck so I can get axles under the Ford.
Cuz I have a d70 from my Dodge parts truck that's geared at 3.55, and it has the dually style brakes I put on it. Figured widening the spring perches was easier than gear swaps, and less expensive. I need 3.55 cuz the Cummins is a pretty low rpm engine, those ratios put it in the sweet spot for cruising.
oh this one must of had the 4.10's.i don't blame ya for wanting to get away from a towing gear either if it's not going to be a devoted tow rig.let that cummins sip her fuel.good plan.didn't know a dodge axle would bolt up with just a little fabricating.decent reputation on their axles?
I guess the dude that had the Ford before me didn't like fords, and bought this one on a whim. Idk why he sold the front axle, lol. It's straight other than the two doors, no rust, and no frame damage, exactly what I was looking for. Also, I sold all the drivetrain parts and got my money back outta the truck, so its basically a free shell to build on.
The plan is to eventually swap new interior in and soundproof the **** outta the insides, then new paint and two new doors.
As far as the axles fitting, its a matter of moving the spring perches 2" outboard per side.
Yes, im gonna use the passenger drop d60, its paid for, has tons of new parts, is tough as nails, and has the right gears. Besides, I won't have to buy a fancy adapter to go 5spd if I can gather up some getrag parts later.
So, small update. I reserved next weekend for working on the truck, and I have buyers for the engine, transmission, transfer case and the body and frame from the Dodge. Ended up ordering new spring perches from ruff stuffspecailties. I ordered a right hand flat steering arm for the d60 kingpin, the tie rod end and insert for the 1" tubing I'm gonna use on the steering rod, and two sets of their anti wrap leaf spring perches. Hopefully I can have the Dodge in pieces and the Ford rolled into the shop on its new axles next weekend so I can start measuring for new hoses and lines. I'm gonna try to have the engine in or at least measured out.
