Been a while since I updated this thread. I completed the build in late October '15, and drove it to Colorado to move our stuff. Got 15mpg pulling a mustang on a 18' car trailer and the truck crammed to the brim with essentials. I had a shop in Denver called rocky mountain driveline re-balance the driveshafts, and haven't had a bit of trouble from then since. The transmission blew up (46re) in January, and I debated on what to do. Finally found a nice used 2wd 46re, swapped tail housings and was surprised to find all new parts in the 2wd trans. A day of thrashing later and it was installed, around the first week of April. Good thing I have a work truck as well, lol. I have tons of pics if anyone is interested. I completed the swap in a month, but I was careful to take pictures and show details of doing this. So, future plans..... Nv4500 swap, 99+ SD interior swap, bodywork and paint, and 05+ suspension upgrade, may do axles as well.
Do yourself a favor and keep an eye out for an nv5600...stronger, and the extra acceleration gear goes a long way. 5 speeds are garbage for driving experience, mileage, etc.
the nv5600 should fit in the trans tunnel also without mods...OR it'll be so close that you don't have to cut out the entire tunnel and rebuild it.
I'd also say zf6, which would be a better trans overall, but it'd likely be substantially more expensive (adapter and such) as well as tunnel mods. if none of that matters, add zf6 to the trans search and pull the trigger on whichever you find.
stay away from rebuilt nv5600's and nv4500's, used factory units are the way to go.

Sounds like you have some experience with these trans. Another trans on the table is an eaton-fuller if I can find the complete setup from a medium duty truck.
i've used just about every trans that came in trucks, and a few more from bigger stuff, but i have my favorites for practical reasons. the 6 speeds are a good all around choice when taking everything into account. in a perfect world, i'd have a "zf7" with double overdrive, or a "zf8" that has granny gear and double overdrive.
yea a lot of those medium trans are nice, "more" is not better, necessarily, depending on application. "more" would be more gears and more mass, they can get pretty damn big. if you tow heavy every day, more gears is a plus...if its just your daily driver, something with 4-5 acceleration gears (granny and od are not accel gears) is perfect. if you want to rip around with high power, 4 accel gears is prob the way to do it.

I kicked around the idea of the zf6, and actually own a zf5 from a 460 truck. My problem with those is not only is the adapter $$$$, but then I have to mess with my passenger drop 205 xfer case. I think I'll stay with the nv transmissions if anything.
I was thinking a 4500 cuz I found a complete setup with new southbend single plate clutch for $1k, with the engine plate and all. I'm still rocking the first gen style engine plate ha-ha. The trans is still up in the air tho, as the auto is working for now, and I have other priorities soaking up $$$ right now.
