The (OE?) leather wrapped steering wheel in our '93 E150 Chateau is releasing black goop from the seams. What year steering wheels will fit and allow us to keep OE cruise function and reuse the airbag? No need for leather and preferrably something with a proper horn button, not those itty bitty buttons you never find when someone is about to pull out in front of you.
I had the same problem with my 2000 e150 Chateau. I looked for a replacement but they were asking too much for a plain wheel and my leather was in good shape. After watching on YouTube how to stitch a steering wheel I decided to give it a shot.
Remove the wheel
Unstitch the top half of the wheel
Remove the melted padding (nasty and messy, try to roll it into itself. If not possible, acetone helps
Re-pad the wheel. I used an old dirt bike tube cut to fit and held in place with plain scotch tape.
Stich the fixed half using two strings of waxed thread. (Time consuming but worth the effort. Do not miss a single hole).
Repit on the other half.
This cost you almost nothing and it is very rewarding. If you screw it up, you were already looking for a new steering wheel.
