I would look for a new shop, no reason not to be able to use a 289-351w plate on a 300 six, why are they saying it won't work? I don't see why one of summit's universal plates would not work

The only thing I would be careful about is car plates versus truck plates. I do know the trucks used a larger diameter flywheel or flexplate with more teeth on it. When doing a v8 engine swap into a ranger or Bronco II, they say if you use a car bellhousing or car transmission setup, it gives you more room in the firewall area. Even though the block bellhousing pattern is the same, the bellhousing on the trucks and vans is a larger diameter. What this tells me is the starter location is different to accomodate the large diameter of the flexplate or flywheel. So I would be careful about that. That is the most important job of the plate, to locate the starter. The bolts that hold the starter are too sloppy, the plate is what actually locates and holds the starter steady in the right place. The starter bolts just hold it in place.
It;s not a matter of car vs truck, yes you need the right flywheel size 157 or 164, the summit plate has knock outs for both starter placements. I have a plate that came out of a 68 mustang, thats been in several trucks with 300 and 302 engines. I believe the v-8 mustang ii had a oddball size bellhousing and my have used a special plate but not likely to run across one of those.
Franklin2,
I called the places you pointed to and they wouldn't sell the plate alone, unfortunately.
If I understood correctly, the person that originally started this thread also purchased a universal one from summit that didn't work for this engine and when I looked up the fit of that one, it didn't list my engine unfortunately either.
I'm replacing it with same Mazda one it already had because the transmission died. It was at a different mechanic (one we used for years) for a little leak in the seal and he didn't fill any transmission fluid back so then long story short I'm now replacing the whole transmission, except when the new mechanic pulled out the old transmission it was missing the plate.
