I ahve a 1999 F250 Super Duty, 5.4L automatic trans. The truck has 56k miles on it, has never had any issues and is primarily a commuter truck not a hauler.
Drove the truck as normal this morning, all was well, this afternoon hooped in to go out, and it did not shift as normal. The engine wound higher than normal and it shifted VERY hard. I stopped, then started going again ,same thing very delayed shift, then a really hard shift into 2nd. Then next time it took a long time to get from 2nd to drive, when i manually select the gear, it still shifts the same. While at speed it made it to drive, but came right back out fo drive back to second.
The ABS light and service engine lights both came on at the same time.
The trans fluid is full and clean , does not smell burnt. There are no other symptoms.
My suggestion would be to get a scan of the codes it posted in the computer !
let us know the codes .
I would not drive to far with it acting this way ,more damage could possibly be done
It could also be as simple as the vehicle speed sensor in the rear diff failing or dirty!
Your problem is the speed sensor on the rear differential. Less than $20.00 at the local Ford place. Really easy to replace, requires basic hand tools and 20 minutes.
