Of course...one more question. My friend welded the plates to his trailer frame. Mine has square holes in it for two carriage bolts. I need to move it back and forth a bit depending on how the WD hitch is set up. After this run with the truck the trailer will see full time duty with a 1000 gal water tank attached. Is it safe to just have the pinch bolts holding those plates to the trailer frame?

Not quite sure I'm following...............are you talking about the WDH snap brackets on the trailer tongue? If so I ran mine for years with just the single pinch bolt holding them on with no issues, as I'm sure most others have done. There's no real need to weld them on.

I do not see the need for welding. I would second Scott's comment above.

Yes, those "snap brackets" are what I was asking about. The bracket that the chains hook to...I didn't have a name for them. My friend welded his because the pinch bolt came loose a couple of times. Maybe a little blue locktite might help. It seems like it just causes the bracket to flex if I put much torque on the screws. How tight should they be?

All yall have been a great help to me, I'm new to towing any reasonable amount of weight.

You are correct they will flex or bend if you overtighten them. I'd just go snug, stop before the bracket deflects. Use a jam nut on the bolt and it should stay put. Mine always did.

Thanks, I hadn't thought about adding a jam nut...and of course I've already been over tightening them. I ordered the rear straps so I hope to be able to tie down the truck for a test run next week. If it will stop raining for a day I also want to put a new coat of oil based stain on the wood to help protect it.
