I happen to be looking at a 2004 5.4L Excursion today. I would rather a V10, but this one is a good deal, and only has 45,000 miles on it, it looks and drives great. I want to be towing my 29 foot trailer with it that weighs in at 5800 pounds dry. Daily driving duties would be really short trips, so a gasser is the answer, and the 5.4L would be best for that anyway. I just want to make sure it is up to the task of towing my travel trailer! Opinions?
PS it has the 4.10 gears.
Personally, I would keep looking for a V-10. The V-8 gets about the same unloaded mileage as the V-10, but the 6.8 obviously has more power and will make for a better tow vehicle.

If you dont mind me asking, what is the price for that 2004?
I like how it drives, I had it out on the highway on a test drive. Nothing zippy about it, but I was satisfied. Now, hook up the trailer and load up the family and that's another matter I suppose..

Good luck with your purchase.
Good to hear your input as zippy is way far down on my wish list. I am in the same boat with a lot of stop and go short trips on my lawn route. The 2004 I am looking at has 92k miles and is $7k.

That is definitely another matter. I wouldn't want any less power than I have, and more would be even better! (for towing purposes)
Thanks for the messages I appreciate the input. I currently tow my trailer with an Expedition (5.4L of course) It does OK, but I am maxing out the payload. The Excursion is going to give me 4-500 pounds more payload, and it feels like a sturdier "anchor" if that makes sense.
A 5.4 is a 5.4, regardless of what it's mounted in. I own a 4.6 Expedition that is okay without a load, but even an empty 5x10 utility trailer can be felt behind it. Those times that I have some weight to pull, I wish I had gone with the 5.4. Mountainous areas are a pain with the 4.6 without a trailer.
I also have a V10 Excursion that will pull a loaded car trailer just fine. If it had the 5.4 V8 in it, I know it would have me wishing I'd have gone for the 6.8 V10 that I have.
The Excursion is rated for pulling more, but also weighs more than the Expedition. I've pulled the car trailer through mountains with the Excursion and it pulled fine. I don't think a 5.4 would have been enough.

Probably should have started my own thread!
Don't forget to add the extra weight of the Excursion over the Expy, the 5.4 will get you where you are going but it will take some extra time, if you will be towing through any hilly terrain or mountains, I would hold out for a clean 6.8.
