Ok I have a 2002 f250 7.3 4x4. The belt starting to shred and make a whiping sound at highway speed. So I replaced the idler, tensioner and belt. That was not the problem it still making noise so next I changed water pump. Still not it so I changed a/c clutch, bearing, and pully. And It still not fixed. Right now the back of the belt is turning black on the wrighting like a pully is locking up. Also the front edge of the belt is starting to wear. Anyone have any ideas this thing is driving me crazy. I only have 255,000 miles on truck and has been well maintained.
Idle it up and look at the crank. You should see it walking in and out if the thrust bearing has gone south. You could also try prying at the crank pulley to see if it has excessive in/out play. It sure sounds like an alignment induced belt failure. I would lean even more in that direction if its a stick shifted truck. If it is, have a helper push in out on the clutch while its idled up(trans in neutral parking brake on please). See if it moves with clutch actuation. If so the thrust surfaces are out of spec.
make sure the compressor is not staying engaged all the time,
mine did and it caused it to get really really hot.
actually turned the pulley blue
also caused it to warp, and wear the belt weird.
but you probably would have noticed your A/C getting hot from it not being able to cycle off.
