My explorer is making a terrible wining noise it almost sounds like a power steering wine but i talked with my dad and he says it has something to do with the type of motor it has in it and he asked me to check the vin number and read 7 characters back and he said that the letter x meant something about the motor it had in it if anyone has any tips or solutions it would be greatly appreciated

Your '97, does the engine have a plastic cover with "SOHC" letters on it on top?

Power steering will whine. Does the whine change when you move the wheel? What does the fluid look like? Full?

The whine starts at :36, and isn't too bad. I didn't listen to the rest--this is power steering whine:
