I picked up a pickup coil (LOL) today for my 93 F-150 after advice from the autozone guy. He didn't go into detail for me, so I come back to the people who know them.
I found where it goes allready however can anyone tell me how hard it is to replace? What exactly does it do? Any way to tell if they are bad?
I tested the knock sensor, and it appears to be okay.
Evan , What is the problem with your truck ? To replace the pickup inside the distributor you have to have the gear on the distributor pressed off & back on . Im not sure Id take advice from a guy working at AZ .
Paul, I've got a case of pinging under any type of throttle and trying to get rid of it. I've tested or replaced about everything, and numbered it down to the Map Sensor, carbon buildup or both. It's been awhile since I replaced the cap/rotor, but they look good except for a little corrosion. I tested the knock Sensor, and it came out a little short of what the Haynes Manual says, however he didn't think it was bad enough to replace.
I didn't know the pickup required the distributor to be removed. To be honest, I never heard of it giving problems before, but since it can't be tested, I didn't know. Would the TFI cause any type of pinging?
I've tried different types of gas all within 87 octane, but it doesn't change. I've tried 89 aswell, but I don't want to keep using it.
I've also got a case of motor shaking at warm idle. It doesnt' do it cold or at higher rpms.
A lot of times insufficient Egr flow will cause the pinging . Carbon of the tops of the pistons , same deal . You can take a length of old speedo cable & attach it to a cordless drill to clean out the egr passage in the intake , it combined with some throttle body cleaner will bust up the carbon there . Ive used Marvel Mystery Oil to get rid of the piston carbon problem . MMO makes a fuel system treatment as well , But either will do the job .
I had horrible ping, hesitation, knock problems on my 1991 F150 302 for months. I tried everything under the hood, then gave up and took it to the dealer. He sold me the pickup coil......and said it cured the problem. Within one mile I had the problem again....damn dealer. I finally managed to locate the issue....my fuel pressure was variable under acceleration. I traced it to the fuel pressure regulator...more specifically to a bad o-ring on it. New regulator and o-ring ($30 from AZ) and I am back in business. Unfortunatly, the dealer and his "fix" cost me much more than that....
There is a passage from where the egr valve bolts to the intake to the throttle body , Thats what likely needs to be cleaned out using the drill & speedo cable . To use the MMO , Wait until you have a 1/4 tank of fuel , Dump the MMO in the fuel tank & fill the tank with fuel . Sometimes it may take 2 applications to do this . What I would do is wait till you have about 500 miles to go before an oil change because using any type of cleaner like that will contaminate the oil to some degree . Using the MMO twice should be sufficient , Using any type of FI cleaner too often can leave deposits on the spark plugs .
If you are interested in a good gas additive, I have used BG44K with very good results. I had some rough idle and it cleared it right up. It is not cheap though....about $22 a can.
Mike: Timing is 14 BTDC. I could blame it as the problem, however it has been set at that for 4 years and I've only had the pinging problem for a around a year.
I haven't checked the fuel pressure lately. I will get that done this weekend.
I just filled up with a tank of gas after running for 2 tanks with no pinging from the same gas station. (2 tanks ago I set my timing at 11.5 degrees). Now I am getting a good pinging under heavy accleration which I noticed after adding techron (fuel injector cleaner) to this tank. Has anyone else had experience with techron causing pinging while in the tank? I bought some octane booster to tide it over to the next tankful, which did the trick. I'll see if it starts pinging again next tank. Just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience from bad gas or fuel injector cleaner.
I had a simular problem with my 88 5.0. Pinged like mad in bottom end and midrange but fine up top. I had a broken wire on my O sensor and it defaulted lean.. I also run my timing at 14 degrees but if I get a bad tank of gas it will ping. Why not back the timing off and see what it does.
