Slider hitch compatibility with Ford 5th wheel prep option.
I'm ordering my new F-250 with the 5th wheel hitch prep option. The truck will have a 6-3/4' box. Ideally, I'd like a slider hitch that simply drops into the 4 prep holes and does it's job and has no above-bed rails or picture frame adapter. Does that critter exist?
This hitch has the capability to take care of that problem... you simply install the top half the other way round. Gives you PLENTY of clearance. Read the fine print in the manufacturers write-up. It ain't REALLY fine print but you get my drift. It's a really cool set-up.
That trailer are you looking at to tow? Most of all the NEW 5th wheels now have cut-outs on their front so that short beds can be turned at almost 90* !
We own a 2013 5th (Jayco) and a 2013 F350 SB with the under-bed mount. When I was shopping for a hitch the only slider I found for the under-bed was the Reese. I wasn't 100% sure I needed a slider so I went with the B&W. It's an excellent hitch IMHO but I learned that I can't make a full lock U-turn without buying a new rear window ($500). It appears that I could get an "adapter" (puck to standard rails) and mount a slider to that.
I haven't gone down that rabbit hole as it feels just a little too "Rube Goldberg" to me. So I've learned to be cautious when making tight turns. Our street ends in a cul-de-sac which we can navigate (carefully) but is still a "pucker point" for me.
I have seen some front caps that are shaped to allow tight turning - mine isn't.

I have a slider on the SB truck I'm replacing with a F-250. In 8 years of towing I've never used the slider. There have been a few times when I perhaps should have used it, but to be honest I forgot it was an option and I just took my time and did more maneuvering than I otherwise should have done.
I know what you mean about the Rube Goldberg aspect of the above bed "picture frame" apparatus.
Stay away from the Reese picture frame adapter, it's junk. I used one with a Reese slider and it's not usable with the trailer attached. So basically it's not usable. With the weight of the trailer on you can't slide it and lock it in place. The leading edge of the slider jams against the picture frame when it should slide just on top of the frame. Completely useless.
This is the same as the one I showed above but it is the steel version instead of aluminum. And even LESS expensive!
I can't see that working with the Ford system..................Any hitch that has a square shank it would work, but the Ford Reese hitch has a round shank. Unless they have tabs that lock it into the 5th puck holes to keep it from spinning. My ball spins in the receiver even with a 2300 pound pin weight, think a square shank would have been a better idea.
The Reese posted isn't an autoslider either. For that kind of money I'd be looking at an autoslider. A buddy of mine has one on his shortbed and loves it. Think his is a Pullrite, but the Demco posted autoslides and fits the Ford rail system. That's the one I'd be looking at.
We just did that. Our new truck does not have the puck system so we got the rail just like the ones on our 04 mounted it in new truck and now can move hitch between the two trucks.
