Over 100k on transmission. Never pulled anything heavy. AT TIMES it takes a few seconds for it to go into drive. I've been told if I change fluid its almost an immediate tranny failure. Then i was told old transmissions yes. Newer type clutches etc. Not gonna cause a failurs Any thoughts?
I think it was Mark Kovalsky who explained how this story gets perpetuated. We start having problems with our transmissions. The transmission is worn out or damaged and is getting ready to fail altogether. Out of desperation we change the fluid and guess what? The transmission fails. It was gonna fail anyway and changing the fluid had nothing to do with it, but since it failed shortly after changing the fluid, we think changing the fluid caused it.

Reason: Edited to correct the spelling of Mark Kovalsky's name. Sorry Mark
Awhile back I asked a tech at a local transmission shop about this legend that changing auto transmission fluid will cause your transmission to fail. His response was that he's changed the fluid in more than 10,000 transmissions and if it caused any failures he would know about it.
