I hesitated to buy an Ecoboost F150 when they first came out. I now own a 2014 E.B. Limited and I wouldn't have it any other way. I just returned home from a 2300 mile trip and got 22 MPG. The truck performed flawlessly.
Ford has put the company's future on the back of the Ecoboost. If it fails so does Ford. Ford will not allow it to fail. An Ecoboost of some flavor is in just about every vehicle Ford makes. It's a turbo charged engine...they have been around for years, but technology has changed and the Ecoboost is at the front of that. Awesome for Ford to be at the front and taking a leadership role, rather than trailing behind ( V6 turbo's in trucks, aluminum alloy body, etc)........probably one of the reasons Ford did not need the Gov't life-raft that the other big two did.
The 5.0L Coyote V8 is Ford's Modular V8 engine. Ford will always have a Modular V8 engine and 5.0 and Ford just go hand in hand.....it's not going anywhere. Where it was available in a lot of Fords offerings, in todays market demand (small displacement, MPG, high output) it doesn't make sense to do that. It has it's place and it is a fantastic engine putting out impressive numbers. There will always be a subset of customers that want and demand a V8 in the Mustang, F150 and larger high-end sedans, but the numbers are smaller comparably.
In the end trying to compare the two is talking apples and oranges and trying to do so is fruitless ( sorry for the pun)
I can't say that I've handled every situation here perfectly but I did my best.
Just for the record, for those who don't like a particular product, no gripes here what so ever. However, the constant bashing, fear mongering, hounding and lack of sufficient data to back up one's claims gets old in a hurry.
We are a enthusiast site and likewise we should support Ford's efforts and rally around one's bad luck instead of reveling in it. Issues will happen and no truck is totally immune.
Please my friends, feel free to post away and enjoy the knowledge and fellowship that FTE affords us.
I have a 2011 ecoboost. I adopted early, because of 3 things.
1. This engine is way overbuilt, designed to take abuse that I likely could never do to it. If I recall correctly, forged rods and crank, as well as 6 bolt mains.
2. The torque curve that Ford released in advertising made a pretty good arguement that this was indeed a truck engine.
3. The EPA rating for this truck is 15/21. I was seeing 11/15 with my previous truck, an 04 5.4 3v F150. Those numbers were intriguing.
1 and 2 proved to be true, I havent broke any major engine components, and it will plant you in the seat. 3 has been hit and miss. This truck is more sensitive to driving style for mpg than any other vehicle I've owned. When I drive nice, I can get near or on advertised mpgs. It's far too easy for me to push my skinny pedal further than I should though. My trucks lifetime avg is 16.2 mpg.
I'm currently at 44000 miles, and my problems thus far have been minor.
1. Bad plug coil at 12k.
2. Electric brake booster started crapping out at 37k. It's still running, but getting very noisy now.
