i have a 1988 F250 with a 460 and C6 tranny, it has 4.10 gears and is a 4-wheel drive. What type of axle does it have in the front and in the back. I want to buy posi traction. any suggestions for a limited slip or posi. thanks
What is your GVW? If it is 8600 lb then your front axle is a Dana 50 if it is the light GVW (7200 I think) then your front axle is a Dana 44 HD, either way your rear axle is a 10.25 inch sterling.
As stated above with the 460 you have the Dana 50 HD front and the Ford 10.25" rear. You MAY have a semi float rear, but I doubt it since you have the 460. A full float rear will have large hubs that extend past the rim mating surface (like the front).
I mention this because the last time I checked, you could not get a Detroit locker for the semi float rear.
Your stock rear end most likely has a factory limited slip. If it does not seem to work it can be rebuilt.
If your goal is off roading I wouldn't think about limited slips, and just go with a true locking differential for both axles. I have some info in the link in my signature...
