I haven't installed a bigger line yet as I'm trying to figure out the proper quick connect to the supply tank select valve and access in there is tight.

Well honestly that is somewhat I feel the pumps have been doing...cavitating. They sound funky to me, but I have posted videos on my build page of others with the same pumps , and they sound identical to mine.

That being said I'm running 3/8 line from my selector, and its not crimped by any means. 6an stainless hose between filter heads. So please let me know what I should consider between the tank and pump that may change this. I believe its no different than any other setup I have seen. There isn't any way I could be sucking air anywhere?

Lastly when I first turned up the regulator the pumped hummed nice and quiet till about 40psi then it got louder, then after 50 psi is sounded like sand was going through it. This goes for both 044s I have used. It this Walbro does the same then I know something is wrong, but everything it TIGHT.

I'm using the SD 99 - 03 pump. Mine was just the opposite as when priming for the first time it was noisy until all the air was flushed out then around 25 and up PSI I couldn't hear it anymore. In very quiet surroundings it is just a faint hum. That sand sound was what mine sounded like for maybe 5 seconds until all the air in the lines was flushed.

My pumps the same way. Loud on prime and quiet with fuel in it. On a quiet morning I can hear it faintly in the cab while I'm waiting for the glow plugs.

Well I guess I can only see. My problem cant be more than a couple feet away from the pump... If there is one.

What pre pump filter are you using? How old is it?
Maybe its clogged or too small. Either way that could also lead to cavitation.

Filter can't be clogged at 1500 miles, or at 5000 miles. I used to pull the stock fuel bowl element at 15-20k and they looked near new.

I'm running a CAT 131-1812 which is a 30 micron filter, I have the original 300 micron standyne unit I can screw in to test, but I am not thinking this is the issue. Only thing I could think of is flipping my return and feed lines from the switch, but I double checked that when I burnt the first pump out.

My post filter is a 2 micron CAT 1r-0750.

The only other thing I can think of is the filter screen on the tank are plugged, causing quite a bit of restriction... I feel that's overly hopeful and not the case either... We will see tonight when I put the new one in.

Other than that I do not know. Its an effing shower head, tubing, switch, to a filter, to a pump. The line to the filter and between the pump are my only new components from the stock setup...not sure how I could have screwed that up..... Someone need to make a mechanical pump for an OBS that will feed big stick.....much more reliable :-)

What flow rate is that filter rated for? Maybe the electric pump is trying to pull the fuel through it too fast. Just brainstorming.

The bottom of the filter is clear. Fuel does not look aerated in view glass on the bottom of the bowl at all. It was my original reasoning seeing the clear bowl to believe the cavitating was just me not used to the e pump sound.

TOMS on PSN has been running this prefilter on a SD pump without issue. They are better filters than the wix, and is the reason I went with them.

Cavitation would occur in the pump. You wouldn't see it in the sight glass. Does the 044 flow similar to the SD pump? I assume it is trying to flow more fuel since supposedly SD pumps can't keep up with larger injectors.

Agreed I figure if I was getting enough air in the intake side at that flow rate there would be some aeration to the fuel.

044 flows quite a bit more than a SD pump 80 gph at 72.5 psi Home page

Supposedly the stock pump does the job. I have no reason to believe it wouldn't with my little 160s

Hey bud I want to say thanks on the suggestion for the walbro pump. Had to have fitting made at a shop since I couldn't get my hands on them anywhere, but we got two!

Made it home, pump pressure was fluttering all over the place. For grins I pulled my predicted out and slapped in the 300 micron filter for grins, same thing and pump sounded even worse.

So after a trip to lowes for those tiny 6/32 nuts for the electrical hookup it was in. Did a custom duct tape wrap to gain can diameter to fit in old mount. Once the system was primed the pump is so quiet I thought it wasn't working... Waaaaaaay better!!!!

First thing I noticed was the pressure didn't bleed off. Both 044s went to zero right after the pump turned off. This one holds pressure and does not bleed off, after a couple minutes, yes. Do others systems built by others on here? I keep second guessing myself on my hookup. My feed from the pump hits the bottom OE steel line on the frame rail, return is the top. Suction side is to the selector valve fitting on top closest to frame. Return is on the other. After reading countless threads I don't think I could have screwed it up....but I'm a dimwit too! Up top of motor I know I'm good.

It would be much appreciated! Hope working on your rig goes well! I agree on the price, coulda bought 4 for the two 044s! Much more quiet!

Pic for reference:

First is my feed post secondary filter going into the bottom fuel rail.

Second is my suction to pre filter on the inside fitting of the selector, outer hose away from frame is the return.
