Fender foam question

Ok, the other day I noticed something for the first time since buying this truck in Feb of 2013.

If you open either door and look between the crack looking towards the front fenders there is a foam piece in there. It seems to be some sort of barrier in the front fender. Both of mine have fallen about 3/4 of the way down and there's a crap load of dirt and rocks collecting in there. I tried reaching my hand in between the door-jamb and front fender but that's a no bueno.

How the heck do you get to those foam pieces and are they replaceable? And what do they do? I might be able to get some pictures today if I have time.

My fear is rust forming in those spots from all the junk that's collecting.

Thanks!

You may get a better response in a Forum dedicated to body repair.
Not many here do body work. Includeing myself.
I have no good answer to your questions.

I thought reading the subject line that this was the rear bed foam
that everyone has so hard a time with it keeping salt water in where
there sale the roads for ice and snow. I do know about that foam
that I had in my '88 Ranger. If you think you can pull it try one of
the cable grab tools to move it around. You might be able to move it
back in place and still clean out the crud. If so and it stays put.
If it tends to fall try a gob of RTV on it and use the reacher of a rod
to place it and then hold while the RTV sets up.

Good Luck. Dannyboy is right about the best place being the body repair forum.

I once tried some of that spray foam insulation but that was a fiasco.

Well, it would appear that you can get to the foam if you take out the wheel well liners but I didn't feel like removing them.

I just took a really long, thin screw driver and poked it through the foam and then opened the door a little and jammed my hand in there and was able to get the foam up higher than it had been. But, that foam is perma bent and rotting so it's going to have to stay where it is. I'll just keep on eye on the lower fender area and clean out all the dirt and rocks every so often.

Sounds like as good a plan as any. I think it is only there to keep engine compartment heat out of the cab and road debrie/water from getting slung in there.
